Underground Interview With The Ambient Society
The Ambient Society is the brainchild of Netherlands composer, musician and producer Mauritz Kop (Stanford University, AIRecht, Ulatek). The Ambient Society’s sound pallet can be characterized as imaginative and multi-layered.
It is also thematically diverse, sonically rich, poetic music with an otherworldly vibe, like a beautifully modulated meditation on epic melody. Their original style, which often combines narration and storytelling in genres ranging from classical to electronic, has garnered high praise in both numerous publications and websites dedicated to music and art.
The magic of their music lies in the complex and challenging sonic vision of Mauritz & friends, which is both inspiring and thought-provoking. Highly recommended for those open to new sound experiences.

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?
The Ambient Society has a background in classical music, and produces dreamy ambient nu electronica music, such as esoteric, downtempo, avant garde, mellow and trip hop, but also alternative, psychedelic, epic IDM, indietronic and eclectic electronica. The Ambient Society often uses orchestral elements in his music, overlaid by progressive drums and ethereal synths, for rich, intricate harmonic progressions that create a full, complex sound.
How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?
It was whispered by a bird in a wild ambrosial dream...What Are or Have Been Your Musical Influences?:Mostly Björk, Enya, Dead Can Dance, Archive, The Avener...
What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?
The Ambient Society is currently working on an EP together with Tia Leslie, creating a various artists compilation, preparing various collabs for release, an EP with Mic Most, and working on the third album with Spades.
Joachim is also working on an EP with Aeliv, a very talented French singer. Their first song, "Hypnotize" (by W.A.T.S.), is available on YouTube and we are looking for a label in the US...
What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?
We want to re-enchant the world and fill people's hearts with poetry, strange beauty, and wonder. We try to create a unique sound that reflects our quest for absolute beauty.
What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?
Of the Blue Blossom', definitely! It is a profound reflection on the meaning of life, and we believe the world needs to reconnect with these questions to find peace and harmony.
What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
Well, finishing this new album was harsh... We are 100% independent, and the members of our band are based in different countries (the USA, the Netherlands, and France). But against all odds, we made it! And we are very happy with the result of this international collaboration.
What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?
The Ambient Society has invented a style of his own, and uses electronic devices that he designed himself. So that's a little bit of a secret! Let me just say that for us, the merging of words and music is paramount, and work on vocal effects is key to our style of music. We care about the message of our songs.
How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?
We are aware that social media has now become a window for free artistic expression, in a world where Art has become trapped in the cage of industry. In the beginning, the members of our band met 'online' through social media, so it might be said that our new album 'UFO' was born over the internet, and now exists mainly thanks to the internet.
What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?
We listen mostly to independent artists, such as Lisa Gerrard -- "Deshta" is such a marvel ! -- or Antony and the Johnsons -- 'Fistful of Love' will forever be on our playlist! -- and Joachim is a great fan of Christine and the Queens in France.
What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?
Actually, Mauritz, the composer and producer, is a lawyer and researcher at Stanford Law School, where he specializes in copywright expertise (for the music industry, notably), whereas Joachim is a PhD in Comparative Literature and specializes in poetry and figures of speech... So Music was never very far from us! And Tia, our talented California singer, works in the fields of music, advertizing and modeling.
Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?
I would say... believe that anything is possible if you truly desire it! And also: music used to be a sacred art for ancient people, and I think this sense of sacredness should be restored, since it will probably save the world...
What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?
I would look for uniqueness, audacity, strangeness and pure beauty... rather than promoting stereotyped things. True art is always unique, and sometimes disturbing. How Do You Feel About Originality?:For me, originality is the very essence of Art, and indeed the very purpose of human life.
Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?
