kirra2Kirra is a hard rock band based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with a strong emphasis on the word “Rock” meaning “Straight up and raw” as guitarist Daxton Page puts it when referring to their new album titled “Run Away.” Currently on tour across America, we caught up with them for this interview.

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?

Hard Rock is probably the most accurate. We like to play a lot of different types of rock but that's the main one. We like heavy grooves with a lot melody.

How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?

Kirra is a beach in Queensland, Austrailia. We haven't had the chance to visit it just yet, but I think we all find comfort in the ocean. We feel like Kirra is a word that describes what its like when your caught up in the music on stage. When its just you, the crowd, and the music.

What Are or Have been Your Musical Influences?

We are influenced by a pretty wide range of Artists. Sevendust, Alter Bridge, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin are some of the main influences that we all share, but here in there we like to throw in influences from some of our own personal influences. Jesse is influenced a lot by the 90's artists like Alice in Chains, Nirvana, & Tool. Ryne is very punk and metal driven but also has a range of funk, bands like Rise Against, Killswitch Engage, The Offspring, & Red Hot Chili Peppers. Dax brings in influences from artists like Mark Tremonti, Steve Vai, & Tom Morello, and Zach is really influenced by bands like Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, Seether, & Five Finger Death Punch.

What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?

We are currently writing for our next record. We've also started to play some of them live to see how they translate and how the fans react. We are really excited to sit down and actually finish the writing process, its nice to be able to work on these songs a bit but to sit down and really dedicate our time to it, thats the fun part. We have also been opened up to the possibility of some co-writing or co-producing from Clint Lowery from Sevendust so we are really excited about that!

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?

Well we have big aspirations and goals that we want to get to, but thats over time and many years down the road. For now it would be self sufficiency, being able to travel and play our music but be able to make a living. So thats why we are currently on tour with Saving Abel, Smile Empty Soul, and The Veer Union.

What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?

That's really tough, probably one of our new songs called "Run For Your Life".

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus far?

We've been very blessed to have an amazing group of people backing us, but the biggest challenge by far is just the grind of building your fan base. You have to play and get your name out there, travel and play brand new places, play to a few people and build it over time. Its rough but its essential for rock acts.

What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?

It really varies. Sometimes its one of those spontaneous moments where everything happens to be flowing and a song gets put together relatively on the spot, but then there's those times where someone's had a riff or musical idea and we just start from there and build a song from that.

How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?

Well with how integral social media is daily life, its a great way to reach people you wouldn't be able to normally reach.

What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?

Jesse has been really into Highly Suspect's recent album. Dax has been on a 10 Years binge. Ryne's been listening to a lot of Deftones and Zach's been listening to Sevendust's new album "Kill the Flaw". As far as tracks go, "Chop" by Sevendust is always a van jam favorite

What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?

Nothing worth noting haha, small jobs and school for most of us.

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?

Feedback is one of the most powerful tools you can have as an artist. Someone you trust to give you honest musical critique, because when you start out its going to be rough at first and it helps to have a knowledgeable guide.

What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?

I would give artists a bigger percentage of music sold digitally. If you've ever see how much a band/artist makes per stream of one of their songs, you know how sad it is. Recording good quality "radio presettable" music requires money and time, and to have artists making 0.001 of a dollar is ridiculous.

How Do You Feel About Originality?

Originality is a byproduct from the influence of your favorite artists. Most people take what they like and transfer it into something unique, and when you're combing 4 or more peoples influence on the music its a real amazing thing.

Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?
