Keegan White is a multi-instrumentalist Hailing from the Pacific Northwest who currently resides in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His music is reminiscent of 70’s folk and soft rock.

His woodsy acoustic sound coupled with powerful lyrics caste a light on the pensive singer-songwriter and the grip of life’s challenges. White writes music inspired by his roots on the west coast. Influences include Ben Howard, Sufjan Stevens, Trevor Hall and Band of Horses.

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound? I'd describe my music as folky pop for the most part. I would describe my sound as woodsy and also similar to many 70's folk/soft rock artists. I think a lot of my music is acoustic in nature but I like to draw on strong emotional concepts as well.

How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?

Unfortunately there isn't a crazy story here! Keegan White is my birth name, and I wanted to keep my music as honest and transparent as I could.

What Are or Have Been Your Musical Influences?

I have so many! I think to modern songwriters like Trevor Hall or Ben Howard and bands like The Paper Kites and Band of Horses. I also think of soft rock/folk artists of the 70's like Cat Stevens, Bread and Jim Croce but also bands that made an impact beginning in the 60's like the Beach Boys.

What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?

I am working on a new EP, one that's a little different than my previous music. I took a more pop rock approach with an electronic influence. I carry that same emotional transparency but express it in a different way with this EP.

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?:

I have so many things I would love to do in music. Most of all, I love performing, but I also like composing for film, producing and collaborating with other artists. Whatever it may take me, I know music is my life!

What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?

I like to perform Seams a lot. It is difficult because of the feelings I disclose in the music but I find it relaxing in some way to release these feelings once more and hopefully they can resonate with a few people.

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?

I think learning to not listen to the negative voices. Many people will call you out and paint you in a negative light, and it can really hurt. That's been the biggest challenge. Trusting myself and learning to maintain confidence has been difficult but important.

What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?

I think it always depends but sometimes an idea just comes up in your head and you are like "Where the heck did that come from??" It's crazy sometimes a melody, a phrase or progression just randomly pops up or passes through. Other times, it is more concentrated and I sit down and attempt to write by focusing on the conceiving ideas. Other times, I just have a strong feeling, and I kind of let that feeling guide me in the way I approach an instrument and play it.

How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?

Social media is tough. It always helps of course, but it's so stressful! I feel like every second there is a missed opportunity but then sometimes you feel like it's too much. It's a lot to think about!!! However it does wonders by getting the word out and the spread of information pertaining to music.

What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?

Hmmm, I have been listening to the new Paper Kites album! I have been such a huge fan for a long time. I also always find myself listening to the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is an idol of mine. And of course, I'm always listening to Sufjan Stevens, another inspiration to me.

What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?

I was actually an athlete, a baseball player. I either wanted to do that or teach! I still want to teach actually at some point, and it would be a music class of course!

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?

Be confident in yourself! Music is all about art and expression! Be who you want to be. Listen to the things you are passionate about.

What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?

Tough one, I think I would somehow create more arts center where kids can feel comfortable expressing themselves musically. I would try and place funding into that area.

How Do You Feel About Originality?

I think it's of course important. I think influences can be a wonderful thing but I also think it is important to find your own voice.

Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?:

I'm scared of spiders for sure, man those things freak me out. I love baseball and cats as well, quite the contrast I know. Hmm, I think that about covers it. I think I'm just an easy going person. I like to laugh a lot and find the best out of everything. I hope you enjoyed the interview!
